Why?

Why you should have your chimney swept

Many people enjoy the rustic feel and ambiance of a wood-burning fireplace but they are poorly informed about the importance of basic chimney maintenance. This lack of understanding can lead to very expensive repairs and even bad health.

The main function of your chimney is to provide an outlet for smoke and gasses produced in your fireplace and must be maintained regularly to keep it functioning correctly.

Chimneys can become blocked for various reasons including birds nest, creosote buildup, fallen leaves/branches etc.

Watch out for falling debris, excessive soot and a strong smoky smell every time you light a fire, this is an indication that your chimney may be clogged.

Prevent a Chimney Fire

A chimney fire can have devastating results. At its worst, these accidents can result in entire homes being burnt to the ground and people losing their lives.

If your Chimney has a built-up of creosote from repeated use, or debris such as fallen leaves or branches or birds nests it can catch fire. Not all chimney fires are noticeable but can still reach high enough temperatures that can seep into the walls and ignite anything flammable.

Chimney fires can cause massive devastation, but one that can most likely be avoided with proper maintenance of your chimney.

Protect Your Health

Carbon Monoxide is a silent killer: it has no colour, taste or smell. Even low levels of Carbon Monoxide can lead to permanent ill-health or death, especially in children.

The early symptoms of Carbon Monoxide poisoning can easily be mistaken for 'flu, this includes nausea, headaches, tiredness, dizziness and pains in the stomach or chest.

Carbon Monoxide is produced when fuel is burnt, and if the chimney is blocked it causes the gas to seep into your home instead of being expelled.

 Avoid Smoke Damage

When a chimney is not regularly maintained, it will cause an accumulation of soot making it difficult for the flue to draw smoke out of the chimney causing it to enter your house.

This soot will leave a black film around your fireplace and soil any furniture, carpeting or decorations nearby
